About

According the NBC's official site, Jae was the son of Korean migrant workers in the Phnom Penh Providence of Cambodia. His dad was a woodworker and his mom was a rice field laborer, and he lived with them until 1980 when they were both murdered by the Khmer Rouge guerrillas and he was sent by his uncle to live in a Taoist monastery in the Hubei region of China. Since Jae was overcome by vengeance and anger, his uncle believed only a Taoist temple could offer the spiritual guidance he needed. So Jae spent his next years at the Yeon Kim school of Taoist Meditation in the Wudang Mountains. There, he learned the works of Taoist Monk Chen Tuan, and aspired to live his life by the philosophies of the Taoist faith: oneness, dynamic balance, cyclical growth and harmonious action. As he got older, though, he gradually changed his interests to Wudang martial arts.

Looking for a secular education, Jae left the Wudang region and enrolled in the Gibeau International Boarding School located in Berne, Switzerland. Being a minority in the school, he felt a lot of harassment that left him a mediocre student, but he still graduated and went on to Russell University. There, he excelled in both Philosophy and Physics. Jae decided to special in biophysics and write his thesis on the Mind-Body interface: studying how consciousness is related to matter. His research and field study helped to create a name for himself as a renown authority in the fields of mind control and meditation, and he frequently spoke at symposiums and contributed to scholarly publications.

The Berkut Group took notice of Jae's career and asked him to join the organization. Though he was hesitant to join what he thought was a "questionable organization", he later accepted the offer when he acknowledged the virtue his involvement could bring to the Berkut Group. After completing the organization's training and integration processes, Jae took the job of chairing the Endophysics Dept, developing the part of the Berkut Group that oversees all aspects of mental control and spirituality.

Jae fell in love with their best Bionic test subject, Sarah Corvus, and they became romantically involved. Eventually, this personal romance led to his professional failure as Sarah proved unable to mentally control the killing machine within her, and rebelled against the group, going on a killing rampage.

However, Jae was able to exercise control over his own feelings, and he fired shots that he believed had ended Sarah's killing spree, terminating her life. The resulting psychological trauma caused him to take a hiatus from his work and retire to seclusion in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, though he did agree to return if and when human experimentation was resumed.

  • NBC refers to the character as "Jae Kim", but in his character bio they note that he goes by the name of "Mr. Huang".

Trivia

  • Jae Kim's original biography on the Bionic Woman website said he attended the Wu Yik Fan school of Taoist Meditation, but his biography was changed in July 2007 to have instead attended the "Yeon Kim" school. Wu Yik Fan is known to have educated thousands in martial arts in Shanghai, China. He had students from various provinces in China as well as from Hong Kong, Singapore, South East Asia, Brazil, England and the United States.
  • Gibeau International Boarding School is not a known school in Berne, Switzerland.
  • The Russell Group is a collection of 19 universities in the United Kingdom. It is unclear whether Jae attended one of these universities or a different fictional "Russell University".
